Lot Essay

(1-2) The artist became a member of 'Pictura' in The Hague at the early age of eleven. Leaving for Rome in 1789 he soon met the collector William Young Ottley, with whom he travelled for some time. Back in Holland, he late became the Director of the Prentenkabinet, Leiden.
