Lot Essay

As Te Rijdt points out, this is a portrait of Maria van Aerssen van Wernhove (1682-1761), who married her second cousin Francois van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk (1669-1740) in 1712. The drawing is based on the portrait by Constantijn Netscher dated 1712, that appeared together with the portrait of Francois van Aerssen on the London art market in 1989. These could be identified on the basis of the present lot, and were made on the occasion of the couple's wedding
