Similar watercolour views of Amsterdam of comparable size by the artist from the Leonhardt Collection were sold in these Rooms, 20 November 1989, lots 205-7.
The Haarlemmerpoort was built in 1615-8 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser, the first of the many gates along the Singelgracht following Amsterdam's expansion in the 17th Century. In 1837 the Haarlemmerpoort was replaced by the present gate
