Lot Essay

This is dated one year after the artist's arrival in Italy, and shows the influence of the German artist Philip Hackert. Civita Castellana is situated by the famous waterfalls at Terni, which was a favourite subject of German artists of the period. Voogd is also known to have painted the same subject as a proof of his skill as an artist to obtain a three year's grant from Holland to stay in Italy (R. van Eynden, A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Nederlandsche Schilderkunst ...., Haarlem, 1820, p. 342)
