Lot Essay

We are indebted to Professor Michael Jaffé, who proposed the attribution to Pontius and has identified the drawing as that recorded in the Crozat catalogue as a study by the artist for his engraving (Hollstein 121): he will publish the drawing in a forthcoming article. This drawing is based on Rubens' Self-Portrait of 1622 sent to his friend the Aix-en-Provence lawyer and collector Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peirsec (1580-1637), and now in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra (M. Jaffé, Rubens Catalogo Completo, Milan, 1989, no. 765, illustrated). A contemporary version sent by Rubens to Charles, Prince of Wales in 1622 is at Winsor, M. Jaffé, op.cit., no. 764, illustrated
