Van Goyen was Esaias van de Velde's pupil in circa 1617-18 in Haarlem, worked in Leiden between 1618 and 1632, then moved to The Hague where he lived until his death in 1656.
Four other drawings of this type dated 1624 are in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam and in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (H.-U. Beck, op.cit., 1972, nos. 46, 48-9)
