A RARE BALUSTER EWER AND BASIN

The baluster-shaped ewer on oval, domed and sunken foot decorated to either end with applied foliate ornament, and with baluster stem above, the mainly plain body spreading in the centre to a moulded band and with tapering octagonal-shaped leaf-capped S-scroll handle, the shaped and spreading upper rim banded and terminating to the front in a scroll and foliate ornament, the sides decorated with tasseled drapes engraved with foliage, the basin of shaped oval form with plain centre and spreading rim decorated with similar foliate and scroll ornaments and tasseled drapes, each inscribed underneath, I H V M

Elger Mensma was born in Leeuwarden in 1682. He became apprentice to his father's workshop in Leeuwarden in 1692 and later became a member of the Amsterdam's silversmiths guild in 1710. He was known to have specialized in table services and vessals of high quality.
