Lot Essay

François van Stapele was born in 1698. He was admitted master of The Hague's silversmiths guild in 1723, and was appointed dean and assayer in 1760, 1762 and in 1775, the year of his death. A number of his works are well documented. They were well executed in the highest quality and most often in the english stately fashion
It is apparent that very few Dutch Monteiths exist. One is in the English Royal Collection. A circular example by Anthony Donker, Amsterdam, dated 1708 is in The Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, which was exhibited at the Orange and the Rose exhibition at The Victoria and Albert Museum in 1964. A second circular example by Tielman Sluyter (Voet 61) is preserved in The Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam, as is an oval example by Alger Mensma (Citroen 965) with mounts attributed to Jan Lankhorst. Another oval example attributed to Abraham van Wingaerden, The Hague, dated 1715, is in The Stedelijk Museum "de Lakenhal" in Leiden. One sold at Christie's Laren, 23 October 1979, lot 3371, by Adam Loofs, the Hague. An Arnhem example, similar in model, by Hendrik van Heuven, made circa 1740, was sold at Christie's Amsterdam on 26 March 1986, lot 320
