Lot Essay

While it seems clear that the yellow enamel is applied over the extensively crackled clear glaze which has been deliberately stained, it is not clear whether it is likely that this was done at the time of production, or more likely - at a somewhat later date, but very probably during the Ming period. It seems unlikely that an attempt to conceal the early craquelure with this yellow glaze would be so unsuccessful if it was being done with intention to deceive: an attempt at archaism seems much more likely
