Li Xuan was born in Zhazhou, which is present day Fengyi in Yunnan Province. His zi, a style or name taken at the age of twenty, by which a man is sometimes called, was Wei Ping.
Li was adept in poetry, in landscape and figure painting. He passed away at the age of eighty.
