Lot Essay

In 1954 Gabo was asked by the directors of the Bijenkorf department stores to make a large monumental sculpture next to their new store building designed by Marcel Breuer at the Coolsingel in Rotterdam. The present lot was a model for this sculpture. It was given by the artist to N.H. Benninga who was then a member of the board of directors of the Bijenkorf.
Gabo has always regarded the Bijenkorf Construction as his most important monumental work. It is 26 meter high and partly based on the idea of the organic growth of trees.
