The design for this sideboard relates closely to both halves of a double design by Thomas Shearer illustrated in The Cabinet-Makers' London Book of Prices, 1793, pl. 5, fig. 2. The two designs were not intended to be made as one sideboard and the type with serpentine flanking cupboards (as in the left of the present lot) was more expensive at ¨3.0.0. basic price than the simpler inverted-bow (as in the right) at ¨3.0.0.
