Lot Essay

If the annotation on the label on the reverse is contemporary with the execution of the picture, the scene depicted could be that of the flooding of the region of the river Vecht in the provinces of Utrecht and North Holland in 1672. The Dutch army took this measure as a part of the 'Hollandse Waterlinie', a scheme of concious flooding of the rivers around Amsterdam devised to prevent the French army from approaching the capital
