Lot Essay

Provenance:
This bottle was recovered in 1983 from the V.O.C. wreck 't Vliegent-Hart which sank with the loss of all hands off the coast of Zeeland on a voyage from Holland to Batavia in the east Indies on the 3rd of February 1735.
She was carrying a cargo which included gold and silver coinage for trading in the East, building materials and a few thousand bottles of wine. Her displacement was approximately 850 tons, her length 145 feet, and she was armed with about 42 guns.
The vessel's remains were discovered by a diving expedition in 1981 after three years of exploration.
