A PAIR OF DUTCH DELFT BLUE AND WHITE OVOID TOBACCO JARS, decorated with a tied medallion depicting a feathered Indian (tabaksmannetje) smoking a calumet beside a barrel surmounted by a jar inscribed Rappe, a galleon to the background, further flanked by wares and bales, a letter inscribed VOC and the caption Sigaren (cigars) above the inscription de Rookende Amerikaan (the smoking American) above an arched drapery inscribed Rappe, one with no.1, the other with no.9 (the rim damaged) both marked for de drie astonnekens, mid 18th Century (with two domed copper covers)
