The present drawing is closest in style to landscapes by Matthijs Cock, such as that dated 1544 in the British Museum, H.G. Franz, Niederländische Landschaftsmalerei, Graz, 1969, II, fig. 163.
Although the British Museum drawing is dated in a similar way to the present sheet, the treatment of foliage and the penwork differ. The drawing also recalls the Errara Sketchbook in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels which is, according to Franz, by at least three hands although Mielke argued that the landscape studies were by a single artist, probably from Antwerp and dating from around 1530-40. H. Mielke (ed.), Pieter Brueghel d. Ae. als Zeichner, Berlin, 1975, no. 181, pls. 24-8. The present drawing is presumably also by an Antwerp artist, and in the combination of naturalistic details with a generalized panoramic view is typical of the generation of artists before Pieter Breughel revolutionized the genre with his Alpine and Italian views of the 1550s
