The present drawing includes a number of compositional devices which De Momper used in his landscapes - the road running diagonally from the foreground, a bridge in the mid-ground and the background dominated by a rocky outcrop with a castle. Similar painted compositions, although rectangular rather than oval, include paintings in a Buenos Aires private collection, formerly in the Hudig Collection and in the Von der Heydt-Museum, Wuppertal, K. Ertz, Josse de Momper der Jüngere, Freren, 1986, nos. 139, 168 and 182, illustrated. Relatively few drawings by de Momper survive considering his prolific output as a painter
