Lot Essay

Many of De Vlieger's drawings, often drawn on blue paper with black and white chalk, are mistaken for works by Anthonie Waterloo and Joris van der Haagen. The present lot is comparable to the slightly smaller drawing from the Van Leeuwen Collection, offered in these Rooms, 24 November 1992, lot 218, and to that in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (M. Schapelhouman, P. Schatborn, Land & Water, Dutch drawings from the 17th Century in the Rijksmuseum Print Room, Amsterdam, 1987, pp. 34-5)
