The Valckhof, a 15th Century fortress which was part of the walls of the city of Nijmegen, was situated high above the River Waal, and as such was a much depicted site by landscape artists like Anthonie Waterloo, Jan van Goyen, Aelbert Cuyp and Lambert Doomer
