Lot Essay

A watercolour of the same view by De Beijer is in the Gemeentearchief Amsterdam, (B. Bakker, Amsterdam in the achttiende eeuw, Delft, 1974, no. 23, illustrated). The building to the right is the celebrated Huis met het Torentje, demolished in 1889 to be replaced by the present Victoria Hotel. This drawing was made from the harbour, where now on an artificial island stands the Centraal Station
