These studies may be dated to circa 1809-12, when Knip was working in and around Rome. They may be compared to similar studies in the Collection of the Stichting Genootschap Cornelis Ploos van Amstel-Knoef, and in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (E. Bergvelt,
M. van Boven, J.A. Knip 1777-1847, The Hague, 1977, nos. 59 - 62 and no. 69).
In these drawings Knip showed a profound interest in the variety of regional costumes and in details of agricultural work
