Lot Essay

As mentioned by Bergvelt and Van Boven (op.cit., p. 147), Knip is known to have bought sheep and goats in order to study them. Goats first appear in his painted landscapes of circa 1815, and from 1820 cattle appear in his paintings of stable interiors, which would date these studies to circa 1813-20
