Lot Essay

The architecture is probably the work of another hand

The subject is taken from the Golden Legend; there it is told how Dorothea, native of Caesarea, was condemned to death by the Roman Governor, Fabricius. She was accosted by Theophilus on the way to her execution who mockingly asked her to send him roses and apples from the garden of her heavenly bridegroom. After her death a child offered him a basket of roses. As a result he was converted to Christianity and was later executed himself
