In an early 17th century Dutch oak frame; on the reverse, remains of the original string with which a painting (on canvas) would have been fixed into the frame. As pointed out by P.J.J. van Thiel and C.J. de Bruyn Kops, Prijst de lijst. De Hollandse Schilderijlijst in de Zeventiende Eeuw, 1984, p. 101 under no. 11, examples of this practice are known from 1611-1632 in various towns in the Netherlands
