Thomas Arundell would appear to have accompanied his father, the Hon. Thomas Arundell, later 4th Lord Arundell of Wardour, who was in Rome in the suite of the Earl of Castlemaine, King James II's Ambassador to Pope Innocent XI in 1686.
Henry Tilson, whose grandfather had been Bishop of Elphin, was educated at Westminster School and was, by 1680, a pupil, and possibly assistant, of Lely. He and Michael Dahl travelled in 1684-8 to Paris, Venice and Rome, where they spent at least a year. A promising career as a portraitist in London was cut short when he committed suicide for emotional reasons in 1695.
