The sitter's reputation principally rests on his contribution to Zoology. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society (1670/1) and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1687. His chief work was his Historia Sive Synopsis Methodica Conchyliorum (1685-92) which contained accurate figures of all the shells then known.
