UPHOLSTERY, WALL-HANGINGS COUCH COVERINGS AND CARPETS
This section comprises a small collection of Amsterdam School printed velvet and mock-velvet wall-hangings and couch covers. Among the artists designing these kind of furnishings were J. Gidding, Jac. Jongert, W. Retera and C. van der Sluis. These furnishings were very popular at the time but unfortunately not many survived and if they did, they are generally not in a good condition. These furnishings give a good impression of the design- and colour- use of of the Amsterdam School period. Wall-hangings and couch coverings were executed by Leo Schellens and Schellens & Marto in Eindhoven. As there is not much reference litterature available on this subject, it is often difficult to make attributions to designers
cf. Frans Leidelmeijer & Daan van de Cingel, Art Nouveau en Art Deco in Nederland, 1983, p. 123 & 124 for a discussion and an illustration of a couch covering attributed to Jaap Gidding
