Between 2 December 1921 and 4 October 1922 Isaac Israels travelled through Java and Bali.
All the letters are adressed to the Family Cohen-Tervaert in the Hague. In one of these letters he writes on the meeting with the painter Jan Veth and his wife. In another letter he gives account of his stay in the Kraton of Soezan as follows
" Het is alleen ontzettend ingewikkeld om daar aan dat Hof van die Soezan te schilderen. Er is maar een ambtenaar, een Indo, die de band is tussen de wereld van de Soezan en de Europeanen, en ik heb zelf soms medelijden met al die diplomatiek vertoogen die de man moet houden om mij een eenvoudig studietje te laten schilderen" (14)
