A TAPERING CYLINDRICAL BEAKER the upper section marked with unidentified maker's mark, perhaps IM in monogram, Groningen, 1627/8, the underside of the base with maker's mark for Jan Metting, Groningen, 1657/8
On spreading domed base cast with cherubs masks, fruit and flowers, and engraved with bands, rising to an applied rope-twist band, the body engraved with scrolling foliage terminating in winged monsters, hanging fruit sprays, and strapwork, the lower section engraved with three figures, and on one side with a coat-of-arms below the initials DI and AI, and above the date 1658 - 16cm high (256gr)
Lot Essay
It has been suggested that the central section of the base was added in 1657/8 by Jan Metting, as a form of repair. At the same time the beaker, originally plain, was enhanced with engraved decoration.
