The identity of the artist remains unknown. Dr Hans-Ulrich Beck (see Künstler um Jan van Goyen, 1991, pp. 311-313, nos. 860-868) has so far identified nine other river landscapes by the same hand; he suggests that he might have been a pupil of Wouter Knijff
