The sitter in the present lot is identified on a label on the stretcher as Mrs van Riel, née de Superville. This identification can not be sustained as no marriage between members of these two families is known circa 1735/1740. An alternative identification could possibly be Johanna van Rijckevorsel (1717-1749), who married Olivier van Riel in 1742. For his portrait, see lot 154

The attribution to Denner is further supported by the fact that Johanna's grandfather, Abraham van Rijckevorsel, was portrayed by the artist circa 1725
