Lot Essay
"Jongkind can be said to have painted this corner of the quayside at Dordrecht countless times, always with the strong accent on the right and a careful compositional counterbalance on the other side. This was the last year in which he visited the Netherlands. He left France on 20 August and got back to Paris on 25 October. He stayed in Dordrecht from 23 August to 18 September, writing from there to Martin, his art-dealer in Paris, on 29 August, 'The weather is glorious, with no wind at all!' Dordrecht is a paradise for the lover of watersports. Four rivers meet there. The Beneden Merwede, the Maas, the Noord and the Dortsche Kil merging into the Noord.
This painting belongs among Jongkind's brilliant evening scenes. He was certainly famous for his 'moonlights', but that is not to say that they all came out equally strongly, but over against these there are the frontrunners. In the case of few other painters is there such a big difference between the impression they make in colour or black-and-white as in that of Jongkind. Thus the black-and-white illustrations must be regarded more as mere reminders." (See Exh. Cat. Dordrechts Museum; Tokyo, Odahyu Grand Gallery Tokyo a.o. Jongkind, 1982-1983, cat.no. 44)
