Lot Essay
Harvest in the Highlands, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1833 (no.70) and last recorded in the Naylor sale at Harrods, 17-19 March 1931 (lot 452), was a collaboration between Landseer and Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1884), an older artist who was to be knighted in 1837, as Landseer himself was thirteen years later. Callcott, whose romantic classical landscapes earned him the title 'the English Claude', painted the background, and Landseer added the figures. Landseer made at least two studies for the picture. The other appeared in his studio sale at Christie's in May 1874 (lot 281), and was included in the Landseer exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1961 (no.49), lent by C.L. Loyd. It is still in the Loyd collection at Lockinge.
