Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715 - 1769) was a poet and novelist, a writer of the German Enlightenment whose works were second in popularity only to the Bible. Gellert was best known for his popular Fabeln und Erzählungen. Equally popular was Geistliche Oden und Lieder. Some of his hymns were set to music by Beethoven
