Lot Essay
In this icon of The Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel stands alert with his feet apart, holding the staff of the messenger in his left hand, and with his right he points toward the Virgin. Mary, seated on a red cushion, drops the yarn she is spinning, Her hands held out in surprise and perplexity. She looks toward the Archangel while bowing Her head in submission. Above, is seen a portion of the sphere which represents God the Father; from it eminates rays of light and a dove, the latter representing the Holy Spirit. Hovering above the figure of the Virgin is a small image of Christ, accompanied by the quotation from the Creed, "And with incarnate by the Holy Ghost, And was made Man".
A label in Dutch pasted to the reverse of this icon states that it dates from the XVth century, that it comes from the Romanchenko Collection, and is described in "Russkaia ikona", volume II. In a work of the same name by N.P. Kondakov, published in Prague, 1928-33, can be found a very similar example illustrated as plate 77 of volume II, which the author dates as Novgorod school of the XVIth century. This icon displays the same treatment of the figures as in the present lot; the inclinations of the figures' heads and the subdued expressions they bear transmit the same majestic mood as that of the above lot.
