After the picture in a private collection, on canvas, ... x ... cm, which was sold at Sotheby's New York in 1987 and had previously been described and catalogued by Richard Spear, Domenichino, 1982, no. 95 pp. 264 ff. The original would have been available to the public in Rome untill almost the middle of this century. In this copy the lion and horse in the middle distance are omitted. Spear, (loc.cit.), lists three other copies; in a letter of 29 April 1993 he describes the present lot, judging from photographs, to be a good copy
