The present lot derives from van Dyck's 'Lamentation', on canvas, 303 x 225 cm, in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (see Catalogus Schilderkunst Oude Meesters, 1988, p. 116, no. 403). Saints John and Mary Magdalene are omitted. In their place is a view of Calvary; and Christs' left hand is placed in the open hand of the Madonna
