The original, on canvas, 69 x 55.5 cm, is in the Mauritshuis and is itself considered possibly to be a replica. The sitter was formerly identified as Prince Willem I of Orange (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, 1975, XIII, no. 366, pl. 180)

Lina Gratama received her training at the Academy in The Hague. Pieter Scheen singles out her activity as a copyist of works in the Mauritshuis and the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (see P.A. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1950, I, 1969, p. 396)
