Lot Essay
The original, on canvas, 75.5 x 63.5 cm, has been in the Bavarian royal collection since 1791 and entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek at its opening in 1836
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the original, together with most of Elinga's genre scenes, was considered to be by Pieter de Hooch and it is likely that the present lot was executed as a copy after de Hooch. It was only in 1891 that Cornelis Hofstede de Groot re-attributed the original to Janssens Elinga on the basis of a comparison with an 'Interior without Figures', signed Janssens E. in a private collection, Lugano (see P.C. Sutton et.al., Masters of Seventeenth Century Dutch Genre Painting, exh.cat., 1984, pp. 202/203)
