The Saxon Electress Maria Josepha ordered this service as a present for her daughter Marie Amalie Christiane (1724-1760), it was made between 1745 and 1747 when the glazing technique using copper (oxide) green had just been developed. The Arms are those of Bourbon and the Two Sicilies with the Order of the Saint Esprit and of the Golden Fleece accollés beneath crown and the Coat-of-Arms of Saxony-Poland.

Marie Amalie married Carlo di Borbone (1716-1788), King of the Two Sicilies (and after 1759 King Charles III of Spain), in 1738. It was previously thought that this service was a wedding present to Marie Amalia but recent research has revealed that it was sent to the Queen in 1748, see Claus Boltz, 'Ein Beitrag zum günen Watteau-Service für Neapel', Keramos, no. 79, pp. 5-24 for a full discussion of this service and the documents relating to it. See also Claus Boltz, ibid., Keramos, no. 79, p. 20, no. 5 for a similar shaped stand with the same decoration to the centre.
