Lot Essay
This and the following lot would seem to be from a series of scenes from the Life of Christ. They are comparable with the series of seven drawings of circular format and slightly smaller diameter in the British Museum (A.E. Popham, Catalogue of Drawings by Dutch and Flemish Artists, London, 1932, V, p. 195, nos. 20-6, pls. LXXVI-LXXVII) and to the series of ten roundels, eight of which are in the Albertina, Vienna (O. Benesch, Die Zeichnungen der Niederländischen Schulen des XV. und XVI. Jahrhunderts, Vienna, 1928, II, nos. 203-10, pls. 54-5, figs. 302-10), and the remaining two in the Kunshistorisches Museum, Vienna.
The two sheets from the British Museum series corresponding in subject with the present two drawings (Popham, op.cit., nos. 24-5) are similar in composition, as are those in Vienna (Benesch, op.cit., nos. 209-10), but the latter are in the reverse sense. At least four of the Vienna series are dated 1599, and the present drawings may date from the same period
