Lot Essay
The portrait of Joost Butkens, husband of Sophie van Lynden, according to the inscription with his name, was intended to be executed on the verso of that of Margaretha de Lanckelaer, called Blockhaemer, but is only indicated with a rough sketch in black chalk. The coats of arms of the ancestors include those of Blockhaemer, Overdevecht, Pels, van Voort, Detterde, Gilles, Han, Sellebrors, Brienens, Appeldorn, and Vranst.
Christophorus Butkens was an active genealogist and author of Annales Généalogiques de la Maison de Lynden, Antwerp, 1626. The Butkens family was traditionally thought to be related to the Van Lynden family, but this has subsequently been doubted. We are grateful to Drs Karen Schaffers-Bodenhausen of the Stichting Iconografisch Bureau in The Hague for her help in the research on this lot
