Born in Antwerp in 1591, Lucas de Wael was trained by his uncle Jan
Brueghel the Elder. Together with his better-known brother Cornelis, he left for Italy circa 1610, living in Rome with their friend Anthony van Dyck who painted a portrait of them in 1625, a picture now in the Museo Capitolino, Rome. Little is known about Lucas' activities at that time, and the present drawing done in Genoa in 1619 seems to be one of the few, if not the only, known signed drawing by him. He may have travelled to the city with his brother, who is recorded as a celebrated artist and citizen there much later, between 1642 and 1656. In 1628 Lucas is known to have returned to Antwerp, where he died in 1661
