This belongs to a group of drawings of comparable subject and technique, which are among the artist's earliest works. The drawings from this group are signed but undated, but were clearly done circa 1650-60 when he was still very much under the influence of Willem van de Velde II, who is well known for his 'penschilderijen' in similar technique. As described in the exhibition catalogue of 1985, the two East India Men shown in the present lot may be identified as 'De Witte Olifant' and 'De Parel', apparently in Amsterdam harbour. The initials 'W O' on the sloop moored by the jetty would seem to confirm the identification of the first ship. The records of the Dutch East India Company give reason to date this drawing between 16 November 1653 and 26 April 1654, which confirms the dating of this drawing. Comparable drawings are in the Nederlands Scheepvaart Museum, Amsterdam (Broos, Vorstman and Van de Watering, op.cit., no. T1) and formerly in the Perman Collection, Sotheby's Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 9 June 1975, lot 105
