A group portrait of Alexander van der Capellen (1599-1656), his wife Emilia van der Capellen, née van Zuylen van Nijevelt (died 1677) and their son Frederick van der Capellen (1629-1706) in a landscape: he, seated three quarter length, wearing black costume with lace collar, she, seated three quarter length, wearing a black dress with lace collar, cuffs and bonnet, their son, standing behind, wearing black costume and pointing to a sportsman nearby

indistinctly signed and dated lower centre 1653 and inscribed with the coat-of-arms of the sitters upper centre and with inscription identifying the sitters on a label on the stretcher, oil on canvas

Lot Essay

Alexander van der Capellen was born in Arnhem, the son of Gerlach van der Capellen and Margaretha Schimmelpennick van der Oye. He married Emilia van Zuylen van Nijevelt in Abcoude in 1626. He became a member of the Knighthood in Zutphen in 1622 and was a delegate of the States General.
