Lot Essay

The East-India-man 't Slot ter Hooge was built in 1776 for the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie Chamber of Zeeland and weighed 1150 ton (see Dutch Asiatic Shipping in the 17th and 18th Centuries, II, Outward Voyages 1595-1794, 1979, p. 696). The composition was repeated, in reverse, by Hoogerheyden in a picture depicting a Dutch squadron off Flushing, signed and dated 1788, in the Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam
