Lot Essay

As pointed out by Dr Rainer Michaelis of the Gemäldegalerie im Bodemuseum, Berlin, in a letter of 22 August 1994, the present lot is to be dated to circa 1780, the artist being probably influenced by the landscapes which Jacob Philip Hackert painted after his visit to the Tessin in 1778, for which see, for instance, the gouaches in the Schlossmuseum, Weimar
