Lot Essay

As pointed out by Peter Sutton (op.cit, p. 12), the present lot belongs to a group of about 11 works executed in the early period of the artist's career between 1650 and 1655. In these works De Hooch was influenced by the guardroom interiors by, among others, Pieter Codde and Anthonie Palamedesz. The pose of the woman holding the jug by the window corresponds with the figure in the picture in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (Sutton, op.cit, no. 10, fig. 8)
