signed lower right R. Savery, oil on panel
30 x 41.2 cm
Provenance
Lord Radnor
Captain F.R. Barton; Sale, Christie's 17 April 1931, lot 52 (17 gns. to Begant)
with P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1934
Th Niemeyer, Laren (N.H.)
Literature
K.J. Müllenmeister, Roelant Savery, 1988, p. 130 and pp. 295/96, no. 209, with ill.
The present lot is dated by Müllenmeister (loc.cit.) to 1618, whereas Dr Sam Segal (verbal information) proposes a slightly later date, in the 1620's. Müllenmeister is mistaken in suggesting that the present lot is a version of that offered at Christie's in 1931, as Christie's stencil on the reverse proves they are identical
