A SILVER-MOUNTED NAUTILUS SHELL CUP
possibly Hanau, circa 1870, with counterfeit marks for The Hague, also struck with retailer's mark of F.W. Bouscholte, The Hague, 1853-1876
On a domed moulded circular foot chased with sea monsters and with flutes, foliate and egg and dart friezes, applied with lion caryatids and with a stem modelled as a putto seated astride a dolphin and blowing a shell horn, the polished shell bowl with caryatid and eagle strap mounts, the rim applied with a broad frieze depicting Neptune, mermen, mermaids and putti at play, a mountainous landscape with classical temple beyond - 31cm high
